Flu treatment in Bang Tao
Flu does not creep up. One hour you are fine and a few hours later you are shivering under a blanket in a tropical climate, aching everywhere, with a fever and no interest in food. People assume influenza is a winter illness, but it circulates in Thailand all year and peaks in the rainy season. Flu treatment in Bang Tao starts with a swab that separates it from the other fevers here.
Flu is not a heavy cold
The distinction is practical rather than pedantic. A cold builds over a couple of days, centres on the nose and throat, and rarely stops you doing things. Flu arrives abruptly, brings fever, headache and whole-body aching, and puts you in bed.
If you can carry on with your day, it is very unlikely to be influenza.
Getting the diagnosis right matters here
In Phuket, flu, dengue fever and COVID all start with fever and body aches and are impossible to separate by symptoms alone.
That distinction changes what you take. If it might be dengue, you must avoid ibuprofen and aspirin. Antivirals only work for influenza, and only if started early. A swab and a blood test settle it in about twenty minutes, which is why we test rather than assume.
Antivirals, and the 48-hour window
Oseltamivir shortens influenza by around a day and reduces complications, but it has to start within 48 hours of the first symptoms. After that the virus has already peaked and the benefit largely disappears.
It is most worth using in people at higher risk — over 65, pregnant, or with asthma, diabetes, heart or lung disease. For a healthy adult who is two days in, rest and fluids are the honest recommendation rather than a prescription that will not change much.
Looking after yourself in the heat
Fever plus a tropical climate dehydrates you quickly, and dehydration makes the headache and exhaustion considerably worse.
Drink steadily, use paracetamol for fever and aches, keep the room comfortably cool rather than cold, and rest properly. Do not push through it with a full itinerary — people who carry on regardless are the ones who end up with a secondary chest infection. If you cannot keep fluids down, an IV drip helps.
When flu turns into something worse
Come back or go to a hospital if you develop:
- Breathlessness, or fast breathing at rest
- Chest pain
- Coughing up blood or discoloured sputum with a returning fever
- Confusion or drowsiness
- Fever that settles and then returns after a few days
That last pattern — improving, then getting worse again around day five — usually means a bacterial chest infection on top of the flu, and it needs antibiotics. See bronchitis.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a flu test cost?
The rapid swab is inexpensive. Where the doctor also wants to exclude dengue, the combined testing is quoted together before anything is taken.
Can I get a flu vaccination here?
Yes. See travel vaccinations. It is worth having even mid-trip if you are staying a while, though it takes about two weeks to take effect.
How long am I contagious?
From about a day before symptoms start until roughly a week after, and longer in children. Avoid crowded tours and shared transport while you have a fever.
Can a doctor come to my hotel?
Yes, and with flu most people would rather not travel. A doctor hotel visit can swab, test and treat in your room.
Can I fly with flu?
While you have a fever, no — airlines can refuse boarding and you will infect the cabin. Most people are fine to fly a day or two after the fever settles.
