Prescription Refill in Bang Tao

The bag went missing between the airport and the hotel, or the tablets you carefully counted out turn out to be two weeks short because the trip was extended. Running out of regular medication abroad is stressful, and it is a routine problem here. A prescription refill in Bang Tao usually takes one short consultation.

What to bring

Anything that identifies the medication makes this quicker:

  • The original box or blister strip, even an empty one
  • A photograph of the packaging
  • Your prescription or repeat slip from home
  • An email or pharmacy label showing the name and dose

If you have none of these, we can still usually help. The generic name and the strength are what matter, and brand names differ between countries — the same drug can carry three different names across Europe, Thailand and the United States.

Why a doctor has to see you

Thai pharmacies sell many medicines over the counter, but a doctor’s assessment is needed for anything ongoing, and it is not just a formality. Blood pressure medication needs your blood pressure checked. Diabetes medication needs a glucose reading. Both take two minutes and both occasionally reveal that the dose is now wrong.

It also avoids interactions with anything you have been given here for a holiday illness.

What we can and cannot replace

Most everyday long-term medications are straightforward: blood pressure tablets, statins, diabetes medication, thyroid replacement, asthma inhalers, contraceptives, antidepressants, acid reflux medication and antihistamines.

Strong opioid painkillers, sleeping tablets and stimulants such as ADHD medication are tightly controlled in Thailand. Some cannot be prescribed by a clinic at all, and some are illegal to bring into the country even with a prescription from home. If you take any of these, tell us early so we can be straight with you about the options rather than sending you round three pharmacies.

If the exact brand is not available

Thailand has most drug classes but not every brand. Usually there is an equivalent with the same active ingredient at the same strength, and the doctor will explain the swap and write down both names so you can match it up at home.

Occasionally the equivalent is not available and the doctor will suggest the nearest alternative in the same class. That is a real change to your treatment, so it is discussed properly rather than substituted quietly.

Contraception, and running out mid-trip

The contraceptive pill is a common one, particularly on extended trips. Bring the packet if you can, since there are many formulations and matching it matters.

If you have missed pills because the packet ran out, say so plainly and say how many. That changes the advice about whether extra precautions are needed, and it may be relevant to emergency contraception, which is available from pharmacies here without a prescription. If there was also unprotected sex with a new partner, consider STD testing at the same visit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a prescription refill cost?

You pay for a short consultation plus the medication itself. Generic medicines in Thailand are often noticeably cheaper than at home, so the total is frequently less than people expect.

Can you prescribe without the original box?

Usually. Bring whatever detail you have — a photo, a pharmacy label, or the generic name and strength written down.

Can medication be delivered to my hotel?

A doctor hotel visit can include the consultation and bring the medication with the doctor, across Bang Tao, Laguna and Layan.

Can I get sleeping tablets or strong painkillers?

These are controlled in Thailand and generally cannot be prescribed on a walk-in basis. The doctor will tell you what is legally possible and suggest alternatives where they exist.

How much can I be given at once?

Enough to cover the rest of your stay in most cases. For controlled or long-term medication the doctor may give a shorter supply and ask you to return, which is about safety rather than inconvenience.
