Rabies Vaccination in Bang Tao

A dog at the edge of the beach, a temple cat, a monkey that came for a bag and caught a hand. If the skin was broken, this is genuinely urgent. Rabies is close to always fatal once symptoms appear, and it is completely preventable if treatment is started in time. Rabies vaccination in Bang Tao is available at any hour, and the first dose should be given today.

Wash the wound first — this matters more than anything

Before you travel to us, wash the bite or scratch under running water with soap for a full fifteen minutes. It feels excessive. It is the single most effective thing anyone does in the whole rabies process, and it measurably lowers the risk before a needle is involved.

Do not scrub raw tissue with antiseptic and do not close the wound with a plaster. Wash it, cover it loosely, and come in.

Which animals carry the risk in Phuket

Rabies is present in Thailand. Any warm-blooded mammal can carry it, but the animals that actually cause cases here are dogs, cats and monkeys. Street dogs around Cherng Talay and Bang Tao are usually placid, but a startled dog near a food stall is a common cause.

A licked graze counts if the skin was already broken. So does a scratch that barely bled. The animal looking healthy proves nothing — an infectious animal can appear normal for days. Do not wait to see whether it gets sick.

What the course involves

If you have never been vaccinated against rabies, you need a series of injections into the arm over about a month — typically on day 0, 3, 7 and 14 to 28, depending on the schedule used. For deeper or higher-risk wounds, rabies immunoglobulin is also given around the wound itself at the start, which provides immediate protection while your own immunity builds.

If you were vaccinated before travelling, you need only two booster doses and no immunoglobulin. This is one of the few situations where a pre-travel vaccination genuinely simplifies an emergency.

Finishing the course when you fly home

Most travellers leave Phuket part-way through the schedule, and that is fine as long as you finish it. We give you a written record with the vaccine name, the batch and the exact dates each remaining dose is due, so any clinic anywhere can continue the course.

Do not abandon the course because you feel fine. There are no symptoms during the incubation period, and by the time there are, it is too late for treatment to work.

The other risks from an animal bite

Rabies gets the attention, but bites cause ordinary infections too, and cat bites in particular are notorious. A cat’s teeth make small deep punctures that seal over and trap bacteria — a cat bite to the hand can become a serious infection within a day.

We also check tetanus cover and give a booster if needed. See animal bite treatment for how the wound itself is managed, and come straight back if the area becomes red, swollen, hot or increasingly painful.

Frequently asked questions

How soon do I need the first injection?

The same day if you can. There is no fixed cut-off after which it is pointless — it is still worth starting late — but the sooner it begins, the better it works.

How much does the rabies course cost?

Each dose is priced individually, and immunoglobulin, when needed, costs considerably more than the vaccine. You are told the full cost of the course at the first visit, including which doses you will pay for here and which abroad.

The animal looked healthy. Do I still need it?

Yes. An animal can transmit rabies before it appears unwell, and in practice you will never see that dog again to check. The treatment is safe and the disease is not survivable.

Can I get the injections at my hotel?

Yes, a doctor hotel visit can give scheduled doses in your room across Bang Tao, Laguna and Layan. The first visit is better at the clinic so the wound can be assessed and washed out properly.

I had the pre-travel vaccine. Does that cover me?

It changes the treatment rather than removing it. You still need two booster doses after an exposure, but you do not need immunoglobulin, which is the expensive and harder-to-source part.
