Scooter Road Rash Care in Bang Tao

The bike went out from under you on the bend, you slid, and now there is a raw patch down one side of your leg with gravel still in it. It is the most common injury we treat. Scooter road rash care in Bang Tao is not glamorous — the work is scrubbing every piece of grit out of the wound — but it is the difference between healing in ten days and carrying a tattooed scar for life.

Why the grit has to come out

Two reasons, and both matter. Dirt and gravel left in a wound feed infection, and in this climate that infection develops fast. The second reason is permanent: fragments left under healing skin get sealed in and show through as grey-blue marks. This is called traumatic tattooing, and once the skin has closed over it there is no simple way to remove it.

Cleaning a road rash properly is uncomfortable and takes time. We numb the area first where we can, because a wound that is scrubbed half-heartedly is a wound that was not really cleaned.

What to do in the first hour

Before you reach us:

  • Rinse with clean running water — bottled water is fine
  • Do not use antiseptic straight into raw tissue, and never use alcohol
  • Cover loosely with a clean, non-fluffy cloth
  • Do not apply toothpaste, oil, or any of the local remedies you will be offered
  • Come in the same day, not tomorrow

If you were wearing no helmet and hit your head, the graze is the least of it. Any blackout, vomiting, confusion or persistent headache means hospital now.

How we treat it

The wound is numbed, then irrigated with a large volume of sterile solution and scrubbed to lift out embedded grit. Dead skin flaps are trimmed. We check the depth — a graze that is deeper in one area may need stitches — and check tetanus cover, giving a booster if it is out of date.

Then it is dressed with a non-adherent material so the next change does not tear off new skin. Large areas are dressed in sections. Expect to come back every one to two days for wound dressing until it is closed.

Signs it is getting infected

Road rash is a big open surface in a hot climate, so watch it closely. Come back the same day if you see:

  • Redness spreading outward, particularly a streak running up the limb
  • Pain increasing after day two instead of settling
  • Yellow or green discharge, or a smell
  • Fever, chills or feeling unwell in yourself
  • Skin around the graze becoming hot and tight

A red streak travelling up the leg towards the groin means the infection is moving through the lymphatics. That is a same-day problem — see cellulitis.

Healing on a beach holiday

Be realistic about the next week. No sea, no pool, no sand until the surface has closed — salt water on raw dermis is both painful and an infection risk. Keep the wound covered during the day and let air at it in a clean room at night.

Once healed, the new skin is pink and thin and burns in minutes. Keep it covered or use high-factor sunblock for six months, otherwise the mark darkens permanently. If your leg is stiff and sore beyond the graze itself, mention it — we check for motorbike accident injuries underneath, because a sprain or a cracked bone is easy to miss when a dramatic-looking graze is taking all the attention.

Frequently asked questions

How much does road rash treatment cost?

The first visit costs the most, because it includes the doctor, the anaesthetic, the cleaning and the dressing. Later dressing changes are charged as short nurse visits and are inexpensive.

Do I need a tetanus injection?

If your last one was over five years ago, yes. Road wounds are dirty by definition. We give it during the same visit — see travel vaccinations.

Will it scar?

A shallow graze cleaned properly often heals with little visible mark. A deep one will scar. The two things that most affect the result are getting all the grit out on day one and keeping the healed skin out of the sun.

Can I still ride and swim?

Riding, yes, if the dressing is protected and you are comfortable. Swimming, no, until the wound has closed over. That usually means a week or more for a large graze.

Can you treat it at my hotel?

A doctor hotel visit can manage dressing changes, but the first clean is much better done at the clinic where there is proper light, water pressure and sterile equipment.
